AUTHORITY OF A CHRIST BELIEVER IN THE SPIRITUAL REALM

Authority before the fall

Genesis 1

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have

dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and

over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and

subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living

thing that moves on the earth.”

The Seventy Sent Out with Authority

Luke 10

1 After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His

face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, “The

harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out

laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4

Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5 But whatever

house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will

rest on it; if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such

things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8

Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9 And heal

the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever

city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘The very dust of

your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom

of God has come near you.’ 12 But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for

Sodom than for that city.

The Seventy Return with Joy

17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your

name.”18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give

you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and

nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are

subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and

earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes.

Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 All things have been delivered to Me by

My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the

Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things

you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, andhave not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”

Sending Out the Twelve

Mathew 10

1And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits,

to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of

the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James

the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the

tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4

Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the

Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house

of Israel. 7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick,

[d]cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. 9

Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor

two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.

11 “Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go

out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 If the household is worthy, let your peace

come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whoever will not

receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust

from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and

Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Sending Out the Twelve

Mark 6

7 And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them

power over unclean spirits. 8 He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a

staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts— 9 but to wear sandals, and not to put

on two tunics.10 Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you

depart from that place. 11 And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from

there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it

will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”12 So

they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and

anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Sending Out the Twelve

Luke 9

1Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all

demons, and to cure diseases. 2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread normoney; and do not have two tunics apiece.4 “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from

there depart. 5 And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the

very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”6 So they departed and went through the

towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

The Great Commission

Mathew 28

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven

and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I

have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Mark 16

14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and

hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who

believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And

these signs will follow those who [d]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will

speak with new tongues; 18 they[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it

will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”19 So then,

after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right

hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and

confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

Resist the devil

James 4

7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 4

25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are

members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your

wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

1 Peter 5

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking

whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are

experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

Revelation and Authority

Mathew 16

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You

are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you,

Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in

heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, andthe gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of

heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on

earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Authority of the tongue

1 John 4

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater

than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and

the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does

not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Proverbs 18

20 From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his

lips.21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

1 John 3

8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin,

because he has been born of God.

Mathew 10

32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who

is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who

is in heaven.

Angels-ministering spirits

Hebrew 1

13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies

Your footstool”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will

inherit salvation?

Raised with Christ

Ephesians 2

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when

we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6

and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that

in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us

in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is

the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in

them.Authority in receiving

Mathew 10

40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41

He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he

who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s

reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a

disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

Weapons of our warfare

2 Corinthians 10

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of

our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down

arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every

thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience

when your obedience is fulfilled.

The Whole Armor of God

Ephesians 6

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the

whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do

not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers

of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day,

and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of

righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16

above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of

the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the

word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to

this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

Authority in Asking

John 14

12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and

greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My

name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My

name, I will do it.

John15

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be

done for you.Prayer for authority

Colossians 1

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that

you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10

that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and

increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious

power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has

qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us

from the power of darkness and [c]conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in

whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Ephesians 1

15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,

16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of

our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in

the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know

what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the

working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead

and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power

and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that

which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all

things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Hope of glory

Colossians 1

25 I became a minister according to the [g]stewardship from God which was given to me for

you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the [h]mystery which has been hidden from ages and from

generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known

what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the

hope of glory.

Authority through Christ Jesus

John 1

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to

them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who

were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Colossians 2

11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting offthe body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in

which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from

the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has

made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the

handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it

out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He

made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Authority through being born again in Spirit

Acts 1

8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be

witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

John 3

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he

cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is

born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The

wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from

and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in

Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 John 5

4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the

world—our faith.

1 Peter 1

22Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the

brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23having been born again, not of

corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever

Titus 3

4But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5not by works of

righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the

washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out on us

abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7that having been justified by His grace we should

become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Submission to Spiritual authority

Hebrew 13

7Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of

their conduct, imitate their faith

17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those

who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would beunprofitable for you.

Acts 20

27 For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. 28 Be on guard for

yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to

shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

1 Corinthians 16

15 Now I urge you, brethren that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who

helps in the work and labors. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore

acknowledge such men.

1 Thessalonians 5

12 But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you,

and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, 13 and that you esteem them very

highly in love because of their work.
